Table of Contents

A nose splint is a medical device that will help provide support and protect the nose after trauma, surgery, or correction of deformities. Nose splints are important after procedures such as rhinoplasty or fracture repair to help maintain an overall aesthetic shape of the nose and help to promote healthy healing.

Purpose of a Nose Splint

A nose splint has several essential purposes:

Stabilization: The bones and cartilage that make up the nose are fragile after nasal surgery or trauma. These structures are stabilized with splints to minimize displacement and optimize healing.

Protection: During the recovery process, the nose is prone to getting bumped inadvertently. A nose splint protects it against any external forces and reduces the likelihood of complications.

Swelling Management: Some types apply light pressure to reduce post-operative swelling, which can result in more favorable surgical outcomes.

Shape Preservation: In cosmetic treatments such as rhinoplasty, they help retain the new contours of the nose while it heals.

Types of Nose Splints

There are two main nose splint types:

External Nose Splints:

External Nose Splints

  • Fabricated from materials such as aluminum or thermoplastic.
  • Attached to the outside of the nose and kept in place by tape.
  • In general, hold up after rhinoplasty or repairs of nasal fractures to maintain position and protect the nose.

Internal Nose Splints:

Internal Nose Splints

  • Placed within the nasal passages.
  • Usually constructed from silicone or other soft, biocompatible materials.
  • Support for the nasal septum, primarily after septoplasty, and to assist with airflow while healing.

When Does One Need a Nose Splint?

A nose splint is usually given in cases such as:

  • Rhinoplasty ( Reconstructive or  Cosmetic Surgery): To secure the new shape of the nose after rhinoplasty in Iran.
  • Septoplasty: For keeping the septum straight and maintaining airway patency.
  • Nasal Fractures: For the stabilization of broken bones.
  • Reconstructive Surgery Examples: For congenital deformities or traumas.

Caring for a Nose Splint

Regular care is necessary to allow a nose splint to heal:

  • Keep it Dry: Moisture can impair adhesives or damage materials. Do not scrub the surface of the face or use steam on the splint.
  • Avoid Pressure: Activities that may put pressure on the nose, such as wearing glasses, should be avoided unless otherwise directed by a physician.
  • Follow Medical Advice: Patients must follow their surgeon’s care plan, including medication use and activity limitations.
  • Monitor for Complications: Report any signs of infection (increased redness, pain, or discharge) to a healthcare provider immediately.

Duration of Use

The duration a splint for a nose should stay in place depends on its purpose:

  • External nasal splints are generally used for 1-2 weeks after rhinoplasty.
  • In septoplasty, internal splints are possible and they can stay in for 2 weeks.
  • For nasal fractures, the splint will need to be kept on a little longer.

Conclusion

Nose splints are critical for the healing process after nasal surgeries and injuries. They offer the support, protection, and stabilization we need, and make sure that healing takes place as it should and leads to the desired results. Nose splints must be cared for and respected according to your doctor’s directions to optimize the outcome and reduce the chances of complications.
