IVF Twins in Demand: Growing Trend Among Fertility Patients
According to the Sunday Times in the UK, an increasing number of couples undergoing fertility treatment are requesting twins rather than a single baby. The newspaper refers to this as achieving an “instant family with just one pregnancy.”
Clinics have reported that as many as 10% of their IVF patients specifically request twins. The reasons vary:
- Many women feel they are too old to plan for a second child later.
- Couples worry about facing fertility challenges again in the future.
- Some prefer to minimize disruptions to their careers by completing their family in one pregnancy.

Fertility experts confirm that patients—especially those at a later stage in their reproductive lives—often lean toward this choice. Dr. Paul Rainsbury, a fertility specialist at Bupa Roding Hospital in East London, revealed that 20 couples (around 10% of their IVF patients) requested twins in just one year. Similarly, Professor Gedis Grudzinskas from the Bridge Fertility and Genetics Centre in London said that while only a few women annually request twins, it is clear that some view it as an efficient way to build a family.
Of course, medical teams advise patients about the risks associated with twin pregnancies—such as higher chances of complications for both mother and babies. Still, if patients understand the risks and complete all necessary counselling, some clinics allow the transfer of two embryos, which may result in twins.
The UK’s Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) has stated that while it is not aware of this being a widespread request, clinics are allowed to transfer two embryos under current regulations. Couples ultimately retain the right to make personal choices regarding their bodies.

Interestingly, in Southern China, some couples reportedly use fertility drugs to increase their chances of twins, partly as a loophole to the state’s former one-child policy. Reports suggest that twin births in some hospitals have doubled, raising suspicions that wealthier couples are using imported fertility drugs—even when they do not suffer from infertility.
